How it works

1.Apply to join

It all starts with an application to join. You're a great fit if you have 3+ years experience inside early to mid-stage VC backed startups or high growth private companies. You're an expert in operations, product, finance, data, and other business roles. Read on for more details on what we look for in applicants.

2. Screening call

If you're a fit for what we're looking for, we'll schedule a one on one screening call for you and someone on our team. We'll answer any questions you have on HG, and ask you about your goals with independent work. If we see that there's a mutual fit, we'll invite you in.

3. Build profile

Next, you'll attend one of our (super fun) Onboarding workshops, a 90 minute workshop where we'll help you define your offerings and write about your skillset. Then, you'll fill out and launch your HG profile. Plus you can get feedback and reviews from fellow HG operators.

4. Get matched to jobs

Once you launch your profile, we'll begin sending you matches for independent work. You'll express interest in the match by answering a few questions. If the hiring manager wants to meet you, you'll interview like you would for any other role. When you land a job, HG will handle contract paperwork to get everyone signed, and then make sure you're paid on time and accurately for your work.

  • Cut the noise: contract leads just for you. Our core mission is to connect you to contract jobs with startups. We hand-match you to opportunities that you're a natural fit for. These jobs are usually exclusively listed with us, so you're accessing jobs found nowhere else online.
  • We're your back office. We provide the contract paperwork so you don't have to worry about writing your own. We'll also handle your invoicing, making sure you get paid on time and accurately.
  • It's free for you. HG charges companies a fee, rather than taking a cut from you. You'll keep 100% of what you earn.

  • Help with positioning. Onboarding to HG includes our positioning workshop, where we'll help you build your HG Profile by getting really good at describing what you do. We know how hard it is for generalists to peg this, and we love helping you nail the pitch.
  • Slack & IRL community. Join our Slack to meet hundreds of people from the startup world who also work independently. It's a non-performative, un-self-promo-y space to ask real questions and get help from smart people. Join small accountability groups and attend casual, IRL hangouts in major US cities.
  • We market you and your work. Since it's our goal is to book you for work, we also work hard to promote you online. We regularly publish member interviews online, bring members along for live workshops with our partners, and collaborate on research papers for the startup community.

What we look for in applicants

Location: You live in the US, Canada, or Mexico. If you're in the UK or EU, we still encourage you to apply, as we may expand in the future.
Background: You have 3+ years experience inside early to mid-stage VC backed startups (Pre-seed through Series C), or in high growth, privately owned companies from their earliest stages. Alternatively, you have exemplary leadership experience at well-known, scaled technology companies.
Skill sets: Your experience “spikes” in one of these areas: Operations (either internal or customer facing), product, customer success, sales, marketing, finance, people ops, recruiting. For now, we don't work on engineering or design roles.

FAQ

  • We work on 3 types of non-full-time roles: Fractional/part-time roles, Advisory roles, and special projects.

    We don't work on full-time roles, but many startups end up pursuing contract-to-hire when there's a great mutual fit.

  • You work as an independent contractor (1099) through HG. HG will send you one combined 1099 each year for all work you do on the platform for you to file your taxes with.

  • It's free for you. We add a Platform Fee on top of your rate that the startup pays, and you keep 100% of the rate you agree on with their team.
